Wiki News. Dan Bricklin has just released wikiCalc 1.0, a Wiki-based spreadsheet (or is it a spreadsheet-based Wiki?). And Mindtouch has released Deki. Deki is a “wiki as an appliance”: an application that you can run as downloaded (even from a USB-stick) – too bad it runs on LInux and Windows only (but who knows what the future may bring for Mac owners?). Both facts show the level to which Wikis have risen in terms of acceptance of their way of doing content management.

An Intriguing Story about how products (or solutions) get shipped: The story of XMLHTTP. We have used OWA for a while at work, with all the inconveniences that came with it; I should have realized much earlier that it was actually based on XMLHTTP. Anyhow, this is the birth of AJAX, no matter how you look at it.

Alex Hopmann also mentions Network Magic, and I’m certainly going to check that out!

NUKLEOS WEBLOG 2007-01-26

Look Ma, No Wires. Thanks to a slightly advanced birthday present from my wife, I am now completely blue-toothed when it comes to mouse and keyboard. Apple’s wireless Mightly Mouse requires some time to adjust to: it’s not easy to distinguish between left and right clicks, for example. The scroll “nibble” is great and works well, once configured correctly. At least the clutter on my non-virtual desktop has been somewhat lessened!

Reminder To Self. Since I’m still a beginner in the Bash world as well as in the Groovy/Grails universe, I’m going to take detailed notes about what’s necessary to go forward. Downloading and expanding Grails itself is a no-brainer and needs no further instructions.

Most importantly, I had to get my Terminal environment ready. So I started up Pico and added these lines to my~/.bash_profile:

JAVA_HOME=/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Home; export JAVA_HOME
GRAILS_HOME=/Users/wouter/Development/grails-0.3.1; export GRAILS_HOME
PATH=$PATH:$GRAILS_HOME/bin; export PATH

And indeed: issuing the “grails” command resulted in a 35 second succesful BUILD. Creating the first application took more than 9 minutes, but remember: I am trying all this on an iBook from 2001 ;-)

The rest of the story is simple: follow the Grails Quickstart, and all will be well. Just remember to issue the right commands in the right folder ;-)

More good news: Grails on Glassfish is Go! (Link updated on 2012/10/18).

At Last! It took some time, but I did get my first Grails application up and running. More notes will follow!

Embedded OSX. As Adam Knight rightly puts it: “Apple now has an embedded OS based on Mac OS X that allows them to do just about anything in small devices“. That and the name change from Apple Computer, Inc. to Apple, Inc. clearly indicate where Steve Jobs is steering Apple. There are a lot of unknowns there: what products will Apple build? What will the new competitors do? So there will be lots of speculation, debate, excitement and disappointment in the future!

High Praise. Bruce Tognazzini has a clair vision and a sharp pen (How about “You can imagine Bill Gates’s frustration. He probably has a cadre of engineers ready to take it apart, put it back together with a couple of screws missing, and paint it brown“). But the actual subject of his column is the iPhone. The fact that the man behind the original Macintosh user interface is quite pleased with what Apple has shown must be interpreted as high praise indeed.
